Beyond the debate of getting advanced degrees, I believe it is crucial for pastors to stay sharp and growing in theological education and reading. We need to challenge ourselves beyond what happens to be the Christian bestseller.
I want to also be a pastor of prayer and vision.
The reason for theological training, in my mind, is this: Pragmatic training (conferences/ “how to” events, etc.) can help us implement the vision God gives us. Theological training will help us know the God of the vision.
Visions, dreams, goals, will all come and go. The only way to stay “hot” in that area is to keep pushing higher, and that’s not a “bad” idea, per se. But over time, it is more crucial to know the GOD of the vision. We need his sustaining presence far beyond just having the latest dream.
