I came across a post I know we all need encouragement from. All too often the small church mantra is “we’re too small” or “we don’t have enough funding for that!” and so on. We come up with lots of reasons why our church is too small for such n such a task. Karl Vaters on the New Small Church Blog has a post exhorting us all to remember, no matter what our churches ARE big enough to do whatever it is God has called us (as small churches) to too. He writes:
We’ve had a 40-50 year love affair with growing bigger and better churches in much of the western church world. Actually, we’ve had a love affair with the idea that bigger is better.
It’s true, we think “bigger is better” (and that not just churches, but paychecks, homes, companies, cars,, etc. The list could go on and on and on). We think small churches are small in ability and we need to remember that just isn’t true! Here is what you have to remember:
Your church is big enough to do what Jesus has called you to do, and to be who he has called you to be.
Your church is big enough to minister the healing grace of Jesus to its members. And you have enough members to take that grace to your community in an overflow of joy and hope.
No, I don’t know how big (or how small) your church is. I don’t need to know. Jesus knows. If you’re meeting together in his name and there are at least two or three of you, that’s big enough. If you want to argue with that premise, your argument isn’t with me, it’s with Jesus himself. And it never works out well when we argue with Jesus.
I know this totally goes against the all too oft worldly mentality of current church fads that go contrary to what the Bible actually teaches – that bigger isn’t always better! Well, okay, maybe that isn’t specific Bible teaching but still if Jesus can say where any two or three are gathered he will be in the midst of them – I think think we all need to take heart and CHOOSE to BELIEVE that!
Read on and be encouraged!
